The Christmas Card

Tja, even geen natuurfoto.

Due to the dull and autumnal weather of the last weeks I had no opportunity to make pictures that I could use for a Christmas card. But then what?

In the photography course we just had an assignment to photograph objects against a completely white background and that brought me an idea. If I could photograph my glass angels that way, add a little color ....  No nature picture this time.

Start with a good photo. That's the hardest part of the card. The full and real white background is essential for the color effect.

............ een beetje kleur      ...........then add a little colour

A border around the picture, some stars, text and my Christmas card for 2014 is ready. I wish you all wonderful days.

Looking for my best pictures of 2014 (for the year-end post) I found photos which I have never used for a post. Often a wide range of topics is at the same time available and many photos disappear in the hungry stomach of my computer. Of course I could easily have searched in my blog archives, but when it's drizzly weather I like to browse in my PC folders. Sometimes I find photos that I don't like anymore, but also the opposite happens. Therefore I now show you a series with surprises and also with forgotten photos.

In the folder of the "Daffodils" I found this picture. An experiment with high key photography. Backlight, against the white sky and with plenty of natural light.

Narcis (Narcissus)
Niets is minder waar.

At the "Tulips" I find photos that look as if they were taken in a mountain landscape. Nothing could be further from the truth. The "mountain" is just a bush in the background and the blue "lake", a plastic canvas.

Tulpen (Tulipa)

Tulpen (Tulipa)

This overblown tulip was almost a painting for me. I photographed it in front of the window. The meadows behind my garden provided the green background.

Uitgebloeide tulp (Tulipa)

And oh yes, there is the Cascading Begonia. Isn't the beautiful chalice with that drop just a Christmas bell?

Hangbegonia (Begonia pendula)

This Cosmos stood in a Pick Your Own flower garden. I sat there for hours on the ground photographing all kinds of flowers, arousing the curiosity of the other visitors.

Cosmea

In the fall, I saw to my delight many buckwheat fields in bloom. Sometimes the plant is only sown as "green manure". The flowers are delicate beauties.

Boekweit (Fagopyrum esculentum)

In the "Sweet pea" folder I also see one of my favorites. It took a long time before I was able to catch the delicate look of the flower in the right way.

Lathyrus

Oh .... and there are the Forget-Me-Nots. Every year it’s a party as my garden colors blue again. The tangle of beautiful flowers is difficult to photograph. This picture has cost me hours.

Vergeet-me-Nietje (Myosotis)

This year I was a regular visitor in the botanical garden again. Other visitors often asked me if there was anything to see because the garden looked so bare. Then I let them look on the LCD screen of my camera at the Buttercups ......

Boterbloem (Ranunculus)

.... naar de klaprozen               .... at the Poppies

Klaproos (Papaver)

.....  naar het komkommerkruid        .....  at the Borage

Komkommerkruid (Borago officinalis)

........ or just at a few drops on a leaf.

Regendruppels

I easily could continue for a while, because in each folder I find new surprises. But this post is already very long. At the end of the year, I will show you "the best of 2014" and before that perhaps a Christmas post.

Nog eentje dan . Een eend uitkijkend over "haar landgoed". Just one more. A Mallard looking out over "her estate".

Thanks to all my friends abroad for your enormous amounts of spontaneous, nice comments and praising words on my last blog. The picture of the windmill was most mentioned as favorite. In the meantime we have had our Christmas concert with the choir. It was a huge success. More time for photographing now.

La Nuit (de nacht)

An English version under the first picture

Boskoop

While the sun slowly creeps toward the horizon, taking the light with her in her arms, the sky turns into pink, yellow and blue. Breathtaking the night announces itself. With my camera on a tripod I watch this festival of light and try to catch the atmosphere in a picture. A passerby stops. "Gorgeous huh," she says, "I have just made some pictures of it". She joins me for a moment and together we enjoy, while the busy world around us wonders -with blind eyes-  what there is to see. Meanwhile, the streetlights are -as seasonless party lights- switched on.

Shortly afterwards the night falls over the world.  With soft shadows she changes everything in the serene enchantment of a pleasant dream.

Even luisteren? Klik HIER.

Photographing among the animals

An English version after the third picture

Lori

Since many years I live near bird sanctuary Avifauna, but I've never been there. As a child I often went to Artis, the Zoo in Amsterdam, and the picture of all those animals in (too) small accommodations behind fences and wire netting I still see vividly for me. I didn’t like it and later I never visited zoos again.

A few weeks ago I met -during a choir rehearsal- a volunteer of Avifauna. No, I had the wrong idea. She told me that nowadays many animals walk freely around in a park like setting and visitors walk among the animals. Of course it's not possible for all animals.

My curiosity was aroused and a few weeks ago my husband and I visited the park for the first time. In the oldest part of the park rare birds still are kept in (fairly small) accommodations. But in the newer section "park" animals swim and walk freely. Together with “visiting” wild birds that decided to stay in this “land of plenty”.

There is a lot to photograph. But also in Avifauna, animals don't exactly do what you like as a photographer. That's why I decided to buy an annual season ticket. Easy when I want to return, as I have deleted many pictures of the first series.

Oplossing voor Lightbox probleem

An English version under the picture.

Kleine zwaan (Cygnus bewickii)

In a number of (new) posts with images is in the HTML the "http://"-address changed into "https://" (with an "s" at the end).
A preliminary solution of the Google Forum (you can also find it there) is the following:
  • Open the post of which Lightbox is not working (Edit)
  • Click on "HTML"
  • Search with Ctr + F (opens a search field at the top right) for "https" and change it to "http" if it concerns a photo. This can be identified by ".jpg" or ".png" at the end. You have to do it for all photos.
  • Save your post and publish (update) it again
  • Go to your blog and refresh it  by clicking F5
..... and everything should work again!

This is very time consuming so we hope for a speedy fix from Google. But till then you can fix this problem yourself.

Fijn weekend. Have a nice weekend.

Wit ...... White

An English version after the first picture

Struikmargriet (Argyranthemum frutescens)

I intended to photograph today, but the weather is not really cooperative. Mist ...... not beautiful, but dull fog. A white sky and no sun coming through. Also nothing else to make it interesting.

A bit grumpy I decide to do something else. One last glance to the outside. I see that the Marguerite (Argyranthemum frutescens) still blooms profusely. Amazing for early November! The white flowers contrast hardly with the white of the foggy sky.

At that moment the idea is born. White! A series of high key photos. While I'm busy outside I notice that it is no longer summer. Chilled to the bone I study a few hours later the results of my photo work on the PC. I'm not really satisfied yet. The pictures should not only be beautiful, but also attractive and exciting. Maybe a little whiter? Do I have to use the flash for a better result? Enough left to learn and try next time.

Last time the assignment for the photography course -as I told in my previous post- was "repetition / rhythm." Some of you wrote in response to that post that they prefer nature pictures. I can understand that, because for me it is also not obvious to photograph something else.

Actually I did make a different photo series for my course. One morning it was pretty foggy and I intended to go to a lake nearby to photograph the rising sun breaking through the mist above the water. Once arrived at the chosen location the situation was very different from my expectations. The sun did not break through the fog as a red sphere, but .............

.......but suddenly I saw an image that easily could fit into my assignment.

Completely thrilled by the beautiful light I hurried to another photogenic spot. I passed a heron (oh no, not yet another heron!) walked by and returned immediately. Did I just walk along a photographic painting?

Looking left, I saw this row -by fog surrounded- trees. Another candidate picture for my course.

Eventually I chose -as you have seen-  the colored pencils, precisely because it was something totally different. All my other pictures were nature pictures again. I think it’s in my blood.

Nadat de mist was opgetrokken..............  After the mist had disappeared ................

Farewell to the summer of 2014

An English version after the 3th picture

Ze ontroerden me.

First I want to thank everyone for all the kind comments on my last post that I made after the death of my father. They really touched me. Although the loss remains life goes on. Late September, I picked up my camera again. In the series that followed, I missed something. The pictures were sharp, but no more than that. Just as if the sentiment was gone.

To do something else I decided to sign up for the "advanced" photography course, I intended to follow before my father passed away. So now I did. It turned out that most students in the course are busy with abstract and architectural subjects. Although I prefer to photograph "nature", I began to like it more and more to experiment with a different kind of photo work.

Meanwhile I succeed again to create “nature” pictures that meet my expectations. With this series "Farewell to the summer of 2014," I present a few almost summerlike images. While autumn is here for almost a month I took these photos only 2 weeks ago.

Argusvlinder (Lasiommata megera)

Kleine vos (Aglais urticae)

Links:Kleine vos (Aglais urticae). Rechts: Atalanta (Vanessa atalanta)

IJzerhard (Verbena bonariensis)

Finally, two pictures that I made for an assignment in the course. The theme was "Repetition / Rhythm". I intended to do something with colored pencils. The first pictures I made with a small aperture (big number), but because everything was sharp they were very dull. The pictures below I took on a tripod with a larger aperture. I waited for a sunny day which would colour the chosen background dark -I knew from experience- and underexposed with a full stop to darken it more.

Meanwhile, I've already visited some of your blogs. Because I'm way behind it will take some time before I have viewed the pictures of everyone. But I'll come along as soon as possible.
