For some time I haven't posted a new blog. Not because I didn’t take pictures. I still did, but there simply was not enough time to write a post. And maybe I was a little Blog-, and Facebook-weary.

A few months ago I was asked to participate in a November exhibition with some of my photos. For a photography course I already had my work printed and presented in passe-partouts, but I had never showed them in frames. Moreover, I wondered how large a print had to be for an exhibition in a fairly large room.

Unfortunately, the shop where I often buy my passe-partouts had disappeared under two cranes in a terrible accident whereby the cranes and a part of a bridge felt on many houses. Luckely there were no human casualties, but the material damage was enourmous. So I had to find a different shop. In the end I had everything figured out and bought.

Besides "Mist photos" in black and white I have participated with "Christmas pictures" from my series “Broken”. While decorating the Christmas tree there are every year baubles that fall to pieces. Often the most beautiful ones. Sometimes I photograph them before I throw them away.

Below a picture of the exhibition and some photos from the Christmas Series.

On fragile wings

An English version after the third picture

The last 2 years I have replaced the plants in my garden (my other hobby) by plants that attract bees and butterflies. I first had to do a lot of research because I wanted to keep the same color scheme (pink, purple, blue and white). Many plants were not suitable because they make special demands on their location, soil and humidity (I could not meet all their needs).

My garden lies on the outside of the village and is bordered by the polder. During the National Butterfly Count  I counted in 2014 seven different butterfly species. At that moment I already had been working for a year on adapting the garden. This year (2015) I counted 12 species during the Butterfly Count and still more later on. Of course I photographed them. Here is a first selection.

Lately I see, besides the many species of bumblebees, even wild bees in the garden. Also very nice. I'm not done with the garden yet, but I think the result so far is not bad.

In the next post the other butterflies from my garden. Thanks to all my friends abroad for your enormous amounts of spontaneous, nice comments and praising words on my last blog. I am still more outside than working at my computer. Therefore, it may take longer before I respond to your blog.

Dance of the Poppies

With petals of crimson
fragility
all swaying
to the whispers
of the gentle summer breeze

Klaproos/Poppy (Papaver)

Klaproos/Poppy (Papaver)

I've always loved poppies. They are real "nice weather" flowers and I share their opinion. Bravely the delicate flowers on their thin stems defy wind and rain to convey in full glory their joyful message of happiness once the sun shines again. With their crepe paper skirts they dance gently in a summer breeze. Every day new buds unfold their beautiful red orange petals. Then bees are invited to take a look in their by stamens surrounded dark heart. Greedy they eat from the high-quality pollen, sources of protein, fats and vitamins. Nectar will not be found because the flower has no nectar gland.

Klaproos/Poppy (Papaver)

Klaproos/Poppy (Papaver)

I planned to make a new series of the poppies this year. Although first the weather and later the mowers bothered me, I finally succeeded. The pictures were taken on several days which caused various atmospheres. Partly because the light is every day and moment different, but also as I have used various exposure values to achieve a certain atmosphere.

Klaproos/Poppy (Papaver)

Taste and personal growth within artistic photography change ideas, so next year there surely will be a new reason to photograph poppies again. This year, I close that chapter.

Zomer........Summer

An English version after the first picture

Eigenlijk tegen beter weten in.

Boterbloem/Buttercup (Ranunculus)

It's summer! When I look outside it doesn't look like that. The rain is pouring down and it's so gray and dark that I have to switch on the lamps. And it’s still morning.

Last weeks I have put my photography on the backburner. The wind blows almost every day hard here in the polder. A real challenge for my flower (macro)photography. Furthermore it is also often too cold for the time of the year. I hardly see butterflies. They don't like cold and stormy weather. I cannot blame them.

I intended to make a series of the blooming Poppies, but they will be overblown soon and the weather is still not improving. So if I want to photograph them, I have to do it now. I tried to take some pictures. Actually, I hoped against hope. The thin stems already move in a gentle breeze, and most of the days there was at least wind force 4 or 5 Bft.

In this post I first show other flowers. The more sheltered local Wildlife Garden offered an alternative to all these "bad weather days". This series has been photographed there on different days.

Fluitenkruid

In the spring there isn't only much to photograph, also the garden (my other hobby) asks in that period extra attention. A combination whereby I always run out of time. For a long time I intend to photograph Cow Parsley. But due to all other activities in the same weeks I still haven’t done that.

This year I make time. I can already see in my mind how I want to photograph the flowers. An overwhelming mass of dreamy white flowers, between a row of trees, that seem to float as a soft fluffy cloud just above the ground.

Fluitenkruid, Cow parsley, Anthriscus sylvestris

I have figured out what I would need for that: a blue sky (for the soft blue colour in the background), not too much wind and no extreme sunshine. That's not too much to ask, right? I have already picked out a place where I want to photograph. I know the sun will shine brightly there in the afternoon. So it must be a morning shoot.

Fluitenkruid, Cow parsley, Anthriscus sylvestris

A particularly suitable morning breaks. But bad luck ..... when I arrive at the chosen place the Cow Parsley stands under the trees in deep shade. The expected solar rays are stopped by bushes. This will certainly not result in a success. I decide to come back later in the day, knowing that the sun will make it difficult for me.

Fluitenkruid, Cow parsley, Anthriscus sylvestris

Early in the afternoon I am back. The sun shines under the trees and the contrasts are enormous. My camera cannot bridge this. I suddenly remember the -already used before-  Exposure Bracketing mode on the camera with which I can shoot a burst of 3 images at different exposures that I have to merge afterwards (with this mode I have more control than with the automatic HDR mode). I decide to give it a try. Fortunately, I have my tripod with me. Without it would certainly not work. I am reasonably happy with the results, but I think it can still be improved. Next year I'll try at a different place.

Daar waar ik woon ........

An English version after the first picture

The place where I live

Throughout the year I often make bike rides through the polders around our house. Winter, spring, summer, autumn ...... every season has its charm.

I love the beautiful surroundings where I live. Where I can enjoy the breathtaking views, the great sunrises and sunsets, the breeze blowing through the ripe wheat, the scent of cut grass, the honking geese flying over .........

Sometimes the scenery is lovely, beautifully lit by the sun. Then again threatening with dark gray clouds and a stormy wind that makes biking a struggle.

As a photographer you don't get bored here. Landscape photography is next to macro one of the things I like to do most. In the near future I intend to pay more attention to this part of photography and to find out if my camera provides me here the sharpness I would like to see. Of course, I continue to shoot macro, but it's time for a new challenge.
