Een paar uur winter

An English version about "A few hours winter" after the first large picture

Roos (Rosa)

Lately it froze a little at night, but freezing fog was -in the west of our country- just not for us. Until I noticed yesterday morning that the conditions suddenly had been good during the night.

The sun shone already early and nothing could spoil a beautiful photo shoot. During the last weeks I had kept an eye on the roses that in our village still bloomed. In case of frost I intended to photograph them with "frosty edges."

The first roses I saw were not so beautiful anymore. Yet I took some pictures. It would be ready in a jiffy. You never know if you'll get another chance. Later it turned out that the photographic "in a jiffy" -as often- had lasted much longer than I thought.

The sun disappeared and a gray foggy blanket spread across the polder. It was obvious that the mist wouldn't disappear anymore and for the rest of the time I had to deal with a gray sky and less light. If only I had paid less attention to the not so beautiful rose .......

Pelikanen feestje

An English version of the Pelicans Party after the first picture.

Pelikanen eiland Avifauna/Pelicans Island Avifauna

For quite a while I'm trying to photograph the pink pelicans in the bird sanctuary Avifauna in the Netherlands. Until now, I was never satisfied with my pictures. These pelicans are so light pink that it's hard to see it on pictures. Also they spend hours on their island in the large pond, just sitting. Not very exciting.

Then the avian influenza broke out and since the bird sanctuary was situated within the 10 kilometer radius of an infected farm, the path along the large pond was closed to the public.

The months passed and the continuous rainy weather discouraged me from taking pictures. Until yesterday, when suddenly the sun came out.

The path along the large pond had been opened again and I decided to try again, not knowing that a private party was waiting for me.

The park was very quiet. Once arrived at the pelicans they were apparently also happy with the nice weather. Time to take a relaxing bath. With their heavy, clumsy bodies they dove underwater, while others wildly splashed on the water with their wings. What an amazing spectacle. I was the only spectator and photographer.

This is grandmother Pelican. She is about 55 years, very old for a Pelican.

De mooiste van 2014

Januari/January

While winter doesn't seem to arrive anymore, nature already celebrates a spring party with exuberantly flowering trees. Without doubt I choose my picture "Pink Enchantment".

"Pink Enchantment"  (Prunus x subhirtella)
Februari/February

Selecting a photo for February is difficult. Due to the high temperature many flowers and trees already bloom. Therefore a floral picture is obvious. Eventually I choose the piglets from the post "Be my Valentine". Just because they are so cute. The post was clicked more than 1,200 times.

Maart/March

In March the snowdrops bloomed. I enjoyed photographing them low to the ground through the pink Hellebores that took care of the pastel frame.

Sneeuwklokje (Galanthus nivalis)
April/April

The absence of winter caused early apple blossoms. A long-cherished desire to shoot beautiful pictures of pink apple blossoms came true.

Appelbloesem (Malus)

Mei/May

Well, I doubt between several candidates. There is the Crane Fly with his beautiful long antennas, but also the bursting bud of the Purple Salsify. In the end I choose another one, the Geranium.

Geranium cantabrigiense

Juni/June

In June I made my digital photo album "The fascinating nature" and took little time for photography. Therefore for June the cover photo from my album.

Juli/July

I don’t know if this is the most beautiful picture of July. But for me it's the one that made me happy. In my area I never see the Six-spot Burnet, but one trip to the dunes provided this photo.

Sint-jansvlinder (Zygaena filipendulae)

Augustus en September/ August and September

Maanden die ik niet snel zal vergeten. Eind augustus overleed mijn vader, mijn grootste fotografie-fan.

Months that I won’t forget easily. Late August, my father passed away. He was my biggest photography fan. In September, I couldn’t find the inspiration and motivation. In honor of him this picture. The only one of those months.

Rode zonnehoed (Echinacea purpurea)

Oktober/October

Late October I got back on track. For this month I don’t doubt about my choice. The “fog photo” -an assignment for the photography course- is definitely my favorite.

Nieuwkoopse Plassen

November/November

Although we already live for a long time near the bird sanctuary Avifauna my husband and I went there in November for the first time. I soon had to abandon the idea to shoot easily a couple of beautiful animal pictures. Therefore, I am very happy with this Lemur photo.

Ringstaartmaki's (Lemur catta)

December/December

Browsing through my computer folders I find “forgotten” and “unpublished” photos. The Sweet Pea photo was the favorite of many of you and also mine. I am still happy with it and my choice was easily made.

Lathyrus

Finally:
A few days ago I heard that I had won a photo contest with the theme "Just the right time".

Dit is het origineel. This is the original picture.

Visdiefjes (Sterna hirundo)

But as if that wasn't enough. One day later I saw that one of my other pictures was chosen on the website of Roots (magazine about nature) as "Photo of the week" . That's a nice end of 2014.
