Nieuwe kansen en uitdagingen

An English version between the pictures

New opportunities and challenges

After the frozen flowers from my previous blog, I wondered what topic I would take now. I'm working on so many things. Often I start with a series that I cannot finish for different reasons.

For a long time I have a wish to make a nice photograph of the Moorhen and the Cormorant. They are both so shy that I've tried many times, but was never satisfied with my photos. Until last week when I got a new chance. I know these are just "ordinary birds", but I'm pretty happy with the results.

I am also experimenting with my new camera (Panasonic Lumix FZ200). Although it's a successor of my old one, everything is different. I even couldn't focus anymore and it almost seemed that I had to learn to photograph again. Therefore the camera disappeared into the closet. Until I realized last weekend that this wasn't the way. So I got to work. Also on these pictures "ordinary" birds, but currently "beautifully photographing" is more important to me than shooting rare species.

Immortality in ice

An English version after the 2nd picture

For some time I intend to photograph flowers, frozen in ice blocks, expressing immortality. Because I know from experience that good ideas are never new, I therefore look first on the internet to figure out if someone already has done such a project. In my opinion it’s always a good idea to watch work from other photographers/artists.

After an intensive search I get a hit on my query. The Japanese photographer Kenji Shibata has made ice paintings with flowers. Not everyone will like it, but I want to give this a try, adding my own interpretation.

Enthusiastic and well-prepared, I start. But it's not so easy to get a satisfying result. It soon turns out that this project requires more knowledge and especially persistance. The "challenges" I meet are numerous. Starting with making "clear" ice (normally ice is opaque and gray by oxigen and dust particles).

When all obstacles have been overcome I can start shooting. Just like photographing flowers in nature, I also have to look for beautiful light, lighting and composition. It's a very intriguing technique which I'm definitely going to practice more often. Too bad my freezer is not big enough to make larger compositions.

Wie het kleine niet eert .......

An English version after the first picture

Gelderse roos (Viburnum opulus)

Even in the polder last week there fell some snow. The white world was a feast to see. The sun was shining and full of enthusiasm I took in the early morning the camera. I looked forward on a lovely photographic winter day.

But the shining sun also had a downside. After an hour it already spread considerable heat and the snow melted quickly. Soon the clay lumps in the fields appeared through the snow, but before that I made some winter shots.

And well, in any case this mini winter is ours. Who that cannot keep a penny .......
