Zomer........Summer

An English version after the first picture

Eigenlijk tegen beter weten in.

Boterbloem/Buttercup (Ranunculus)

It's summer! When I look outside it doesn't look like that. The rain is pouring down and it's so gray and dark that I have to switch on the lamps. And it’s still morning.

Last weeks I have put my photography on the backburner. The wind blows almost every day hard here in the polder. A real challenge for my flower (macro)photography. Furthermore it is also often too cold for the time of the year. I hardly see butterflies. They don't like cold and stormy weather. I cannot blame them.

I intended to make a series of the blooming Poppies, but they will be overblown soon and the weather is still not improving. So if I want to photograph them, I have to do it now. I tried to take some pictures. Actually, I hoped against hope. The thin stems already move in a gentle breeze, and most of the days there was at least wind force 4 or 5 Bft.

In this post I first show other flowers. The more sheltered local Wildlife Garden offered an alternative to all these "bad weather days". This series has been photographed there on different days.

Fluitenkruid

In the spring there isn't only much to photograph, also the garden (my other hobby) asks in that period extra attention. A combination whereby I always run out of time. For a long time I intend to photograph Cow Parsley. But due to all other activities in the same weeks I still haven’t done that.

This year I make time. I can already see in my mind how I want to photograph the flowers. An overwhelming mass of dreamy white flowers, between a row of trees, that seem to float as a soft fluffy cloud just above the ground.

I have figured out what I would need for that: a blue sky (for the soft blue colour in the background), not too much wind and no extreme sunshine. That's not too much to ask, right? I have already picked out a place where I want to photograph. I know the sun will shine brightly there in the afternoon. So it must be a morning shoot.

A particularly suitable morning breaks. But bad luck ..... when I arrive at the chosen place the Cow Parsley stands under the trees in deep shade. The expected solar rays are stopped by bushes. This will certainly not result in a success. I decide to come back later in the day, knowing that the sun will make it difficult for me.

Early in the afternoon I am back. The sun shines under the trees and the contrasts are enormous. My camera cannot bridge this. I suddenly remember the -already used before-  Exposure Bracketing mode on the camera with which I can shoot a burst of 3 images at different exposures that I have to merge afterwards (with this mode I have more control than with the automatic HDR mode). I decide to give it a try. Fortunately, I have my tripod with me. Without it would certainly not work. I am reasonably happy with the results, but I think it can still be improved. Next year I'll try at a different place.
